Harvest time and plant age on the content and chemical composition of the essential oil of Alpinia zerumbet Horticultura Brasileira
Santos,Martiely S; Jezler,Caroline N; Oliveira,Ariana RMF de; Oliveira,Rosilene A; Mielke,Marcelo S; Costa,Larissa CB.
Alpinia zerumbet is an aromatic and medicinal plant rich in essential oil, known as colônia. Essential oils are derived from secondary metabolism and may be a source of raw materials for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food and perfumery industry. The plant secondary metabolism and biosynthetic activity can vary according to endogenous and exogenous factors to which it is exposed. In this context, in this study we evaluated the influence of harvest time and plant age of Alpinia zerumbet on biomass and essential oil production. For the harvest time experiment the plants of A. zerumbet were harvested at different times (8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 h), using a completely randomized design with four replications. In the plant age experiment the seedlings were...

Histochemistry, content and chemical composition of essential oil in different organs of Alpinia zerumbet Ciência Rural
Jezler,Caroline Nery; Batista,Ricardo Silva; Alves,Péricles Barreto; Silva,Delmira da Costa; Costa,Larissa Corrêa do Bomfim.
Alpinia zerumbet is a medicinal plant from Asian origin used in folk medicine for the treatment of hypertension, which effect is attributed to terpinen-4-ol, the major component of the essential oil. The objective of this work was to identify the essential oil secretory structures in the leaf, flower, root and rhizome of this plant, and analyze the content and the chemical composition of the oil in the different organs of the plant. Sections were subjected to histochemical test with Nadi reagent for in situ localization of secretion. The essential oil extraction was performed by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus and the compounds were identified in CG-EM/FID. The histochemical test was positive for terpenoids, confirming the presence of essential...

Nanoencapsulated Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil exerts anesthetic effects in the brachyuran crab using Neohelice granulate Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,CARINE F.; LIMA,TÁBATA; BALDISSERA,MATHEUS D.; GEIHS,MÁRCIO A.; MACIEL,FÁBIO E.; NERY,LUIZ E.M.; SANTOS,ROBERTO C.V.; RAFFIN,RENATA P.; HEINZMANN,BERTA M.; CARON,BRAULIO O.; BALDISSEROTTO,BERNARDO.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of several anesthetics in the brachyuran crab Neohelice granulata, an emergent experimental model. The essential oils (EOs) of Lippia alba, Aloysia tryphilla, and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil; TTO), the isolated compounds eugenol, menthol, terpinen-4-ol, and the nanoencapsulated form of TTO, were administered in one or more of the following ways: added to the water (immersion), through an arthrodial membrane (injected), or by oral gavage. Unexpectedly, most EOs did not produce an anesthetic effect after immersion. Only TTO and eugenol induced anesthesia by immersion, with very long induction and recovery times compared to anesthesia of other crustaceans. However, a good...

Terpinen-4-ol, tyrosol, and β-lapachone as potential antifungals against dimorphic fungi BJM
Brilhante,Raimunda Sâmia Nogueira; Caetano,Érica Pacheco; Lima,Rita Amanda Chaves de; Marques,Francisca Jakelyne de Farias; Castelo-Branco,Débora de Souza Collares Maia; Melo,Charlline Vládia Silva de; Guedes,Glaucia Morgana de Melo; Oliveira,Jonathas Sales de; Camargo,Zoilo Pires de; Moreira,José Luciano Bezerra; Monteiro,André Jalles; Bandeira,Tereza de Jesus Pinheiro Gomes; Cordeiro,Rossana de Aguiar; Rocha,Marcos Fábio Gadelha; Sidrim,José Júlio Costa.
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antifungal activity of terpinen-4-ol, tyrosol, and β-lapachone against strains of Coccidioides posadasii in filamentous phase (n = 22) and Histoplasma capsulatum in both filamentous (n = 40) and yeast phases (n = 13), using the broth dilution methods as described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of these compounds. The mechanisms of action of these compounds were also investigated by analyzing their effect on cell membrane permeability and ergosterol synthesis. The MIC and MFCf these compounds against C. posadasii, mycelial H. capsulatum, and yeast-like H. capsulatum, were in the following...
